We Are in this Together

“I pray they will be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. I pray that they also will be in us, so that the world will believe that you sent me.” John 17: 21 (CEB)

“The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind—
Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you,
So they might be one heart and mind with us.
Then the world might believe that you, in fact, sent me.” John 17: 21 (MSG)

On the last Thursday of Jesus’ earthly ministry, He sits with His disciples and prays the words recorded in John 17: 21 that “they will be one.” Jesus was praying this prayer for all believers, but we cannot be one with all believers unless we are first one with each other here at Second Baptist Church of Asbury Park.

Notice the gravity of the unity that Jesus is praying that we have. Jesus prays that “we will be one” not for jokes or giggles, but “so that the world will believe that you sent me.” WOW!!! Let me personalize this for us: Jesus says that if we are not unified, if we are not one, then the world will not even believe in Jesus! You know why? Our salvation and sustenance is based on the unity between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So if we who are made in God’s image are not one, then it tells the world that the understanding upon which we base our faith is a hoax…. This is NOT what we want to be questioned about at the gates of heaven.

We are already in the second month of 2017, February. In this month where we celebrate Black History, we will try to eradicate in this church the barrier to our being great, lack of unity. Our sermon series is...

“We Are in this Together!”

We are on the journey to greatness, unity, abundance, peace, contentment, and joy together! Let us work toward this end. We will have to get rid of some things, we will have to begin new practices, we will even have to experience the uncomfortable for a little while. We should make up in our mind that no matter what it takes, we are willing so that when the world looks at Second Baptist Church, they will be able to say, “I know that Jesus is real!... I believe in the risen Savior!... I want a relationship with the Divine Deliver!”

It can be done, because...

“We Are in this Together!”
